Introduction: The realisation of transience

Imagine waking up one day and realising that the world is not as magical as you once believed. This realisation can trigger a deep sadness, which Virginia Woolf described impressively. Understanding it helps you to live through life's challenges more consciously and find meaning in your own experiences.

What is sadness?

One example of this is the transience of love. Romantic love is often imagined as a fairy tale, but in reality it is a fragile and fleeting feeling. Those who recognise this can experience shared moments with greater appreciation.

A related concept is the Japanese ‘Mono no Aware’, which recognises the melancholy about the passing of things. This way of thinking helps to perceive the beauty in impermanence.

Accepting impermanence means realising that nothing is permanent - neither happiness nor love. This realisation helps us to live the present moment more consciously. Ways to accept impermanence:

  • Self-awareness: Stay in the moment and focus your attention on what is, rather than what could be lost.

  • Gratitude: Make a daily note of things you are grateful for.

  • Letting go: Detach yourself from things that are out of your control.

Why it's important: Those who accept impermanence live more authentically and appreciate the fleeting moments of life.

Find solace in solitude

Solitude can be a valuable source of self-reflection. It offers space to organise thoughts and feelings. Methods for experiencing loneliness as enrichment:

  • Diary: Writing down thoughts allows emotions to be perceived more clearly.

  • Movement: Connecting with the environment promotes inner peace.

  • Meditation: Concentrating on your breathing helps to calm your mind.

A new perspective

Life is not about big adventures, but about small, meaningful moments. A change in perspective can help you find fulfilment in the everyday:
